Ten years have passed since the Holy Grail War took place in Fuyuki City. The contest between the seven masters and seven Heroic Spirits (Servants) in pursuit of the power of the Holy Grail is about to begin once again. Rin Tohsaka, raised in a family with a lengthy mage lineage, has devoted herself to this conflict that her father, Tokiomi Tohsaka, had also participated in. Rin attempts to summon Saber, the most powerful Servant, but what appears before her is a Heroic Spirit who does not even know his own name.

Shirou was resuscitated by Rin, but he is attacked by Lancer again that night. While Shirou bears the brunt of Lancer’s attacks, a Servant is summoned in front of his eyes.

Shirou goes to the Fuyuki Church with Rin, who had rushed to the Emiya estate after Lancer’s attack. Shirou is told about the Holy Grail Wars by Kotomine Kirei, its overseer, and is shocked by what he hears. However, when he learns that the great fire 10 years ago, which he himself was injured in, was caused by the Holy Grail War, he decides to fight in it as a Master.

After Shirou and the others leave the church, their way is blocked by a Servant and a little girl who introduces herself as Illyasviel. Rin and the others find themselves hard pressed by Berserker’s overwhelming might. In his very first battle, Shirou learns just how powerless he truly is.

Summoned by Fujimura, Shirou and Saber set out to his school. Shirou tries to explain away Saber, who is unable to dematerialize, but Fujimura and Sakura both end up staying at Shirou’s house somehow… Elsewhere, Rin had gone to visit the site of the gas leak and, based on faint traces of mana there, determines that Caster was behind it.

Shirou goes to school without Saber. Rin, annoyed at Shirou for acting alone, waits until no one is around and attacks him. Rin corners him, but then they hear a female student scream.

Rin and Shirou have formed a truce to deal with the other Master that is hiding in the school. But no sooner have they done so when Shinji tells Shirou that he is Rider’s Master and asks him to work together. That night, Shirou had been practicing magic in the storehouse, but the next thing he knows, he finds himself at Ryudou Temple, which Caster has made into her lair.

When Saber arrives at Ryudou Temple to rescue Shirou, she finds her way blocked by Assassin. Saber is unable to break through his skill with the sword, which is far beyond what one would expect from the Assassin class. Elsewhere, Archer and Caster face off in the courtyard of Ryudou Temple, where Shirou is being held. As they talk, Shirou is disgusted by Archer’s way of thinking.

After training with Saber, Shirou goes to school. During lunch recess, Shirou gets fresh confirmation of his united front with Rin, but at that moment, the magic circle that had been laid out at the school is activated. Shirou uses a Command Seal and summons Saber, and he and Rin set out to reach Shinji to put an end to the circle.

Rider, who protected Shinji from Caster, is eliminated. Rin had concluded that Caster’s Master is someone at school, but she focuses instead on formulating a strategy to smooth over Archer and Shirou’s relationship. Elsewhere, Shinji, who has lost his Servant, goes to Kirei to seek refuge at the church. When Shinji expresses his dissatisfaction with Rider, Kirei informs him that a new Servant is available.

Rin, having concluded from Issei’s testimony that Kuzuki is Caster’s Master, puts together a plan to attack him with Shirou that same day. Seeing Kuzuki offer no resistance when struck by Rin’s sneak attack, Shirou runs out to him, but then Caster appears. When Shirou lays out Caster’s atrocities and tries to win Kuzuki over, Kuzuki reveals his true nature.

Shirou and the others fight off Kuzuki and Caster. However, Shirou loses all feeling in the left half of his body as a result of forcibly using too much mana. Rin visits him at home the following day under the pretext that he missed their regular check-in, but she then stays the night for some reason. And then, when Archer sees Shirou’s condition, he says that he has seen such symptoms before.

The morning after Rin spends the night, Shirou and Saber go out on a date with Rin at her suggestion. Forgetting about the fighting, the three of them unwind, but they come under attack from Caster once again. Shirou flatly rejects her, but Shirou has both his Command Seals and Saber stolen from him by Caster, who becomes enraged at his response.

Shirou and Rin work up a plan to defeat Caster before Saber falls under her control. Around that same time, Caster is reflecting on her memories of the Master who had originally summoned her. Scorned as a witch and betrayed by her Master, Caster escapes from him by breaking her own pact and killing him.

Shirou and Rin come to Einzbern Castle, but a battle between Berserker and Gilgamesh was already underway. As Berserker fights while shielding Illya, he is gradually worn down in the face of Gilgamesh’s overwhelming Noble Phantasm.

Giving in to rage, Shirou ignores Rin’s attempts to stop him and runs out from their hiding place. Gilgamesh is about to kill Shirou, but he sees Rin and leaves. Rin had been opposed to Shirou’s self-sacrificing way of life, but she accepts it when she asks him again to explain his reasons why.

Archer and Lancer clash furiously. Archer counters with the most powerful shield he has when Lancer unleashes his fatal Noble Phantasm during their contentious battle. They find themselves in a predicament due to the insurmountable difference in their abilities, but Rin had a clever trick up her sleeve.

Even though Archer’s pact with Caster was voided with her defeat, he attacks Shirou again, intent on killing him. Rin finds herself in the sights of both Kirei, who wants to use her as the Holy Grail’s vessel, and Shinji, who wants her as his plaything. Elsewhere, Shirou is put on the defensive by Archer’s attacks. But Shirou, who refuses to give up all the same, is confronted with the world that Archer eventually reached. It is the basis of his nature as a mage: a Reality Marble containing a wasteland that stretches as far as the eye can see with countless swords thrust into the ground.

Archer fights to erase his hopelessness. Shirou fights to live up to his beliefs. As they clash again and again, it is himself that Shirou begins to fight against, not Archer. Even though he understands that putting others before himself is hypocritical, he believes that it cannot be wrong.

Shirou and the others, having learned from Gilgamesh what the true goal of the Holy Grail War is, formulate a plan in preparation for the battle at Ryudou Temple, the altar for this current war. What is the countermeasure that Rin devises in response to Shirou’s opinion that Saber is a poor match against Gilgamesh’s Noble Phantasm?

Ep 27 - Incarnation

Shirou and Rin arrive at the manifested Holy Grail, only to be confronted by Gilgamesh. As that same time, Saber faces off against Assassin, who was lying in wait for her at the temple’s front gate. With the ambitions of seven mages and seven Heroic Spirits now revealed, the Holy Grail War is about to come to an end.

Gilgamesh denounces Shirou as a fake. However, Shirou has long since made peace with being a fake and that his dreams are hypocrisy. He hardens his resolve to remain true to his ideals and recites the words that give form to his heart of hearts. The incantation is not one of regret, but of resolve. The story revolving around the Holy Grail will reach its conclusion here.
